These filters feature various pore sizes which effectively remove dissolved particles including dust, parasites, viruses, bacteria, and chemicals.
- Disinfection: Once the water has been filtered, a disinfectant such as chlorine or chloramine may be added to kill any remaining parasites, viruses, or bacteria. This disinfecting agent also protects the water from gathering germs as it is piped into homes and businesses.
How water is treated in any given community depends largely on the quality of the water as it enters the treatment plant. Surface water generally requires a more in-depth treatment than ground water, since lakes, streams, and rivers contain more sediment and pollutants than ground water and therefore carry a higher likelihood of contamination.
